Chloé Zhao Made History Winning The Golden Globe For Best Director And Everyone Is Living For It

If you haven’t seen Nomadland yet, you should fix that, STAT.

So, the Golden Globes happened last night. And while there were a lot of awkward moments, jokes, and tears throughout the show, some serious history was made too. Because Chloé Zhao, who directed Nomadland, won the Golden Globe for Best Director.

The film also won Best Picture Drama, for the record.

Zhao’s win makes her only the second woman ever to win the award (the first being Barbra Streisand for Yentl in 1984) and the first Asian woman ever to win (Ang Lee has won twice before, for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in 2001 and Brokeback Mountain in 2006).

Speaking in a virtual press room after her win, Zhao said, “Sometimes a first feels like a long time coming. I’m sure there are many others before me that deserve the same recognition. I just love what I do, I just really love it. If this means more people like me get to live their dream and get to do what I do, I’m happy.”

For those who haven’t seen it yet, Nomadland follows the journey of a woman named Fern (Frances McDormand) as she packs her van and sets off on the road, exploring a life outside of conventional society as a modern-day nomad.

It’s streaming NOW on Hulu if you wanna check it out (or watch it again!).

Zhao, and her film, have actually been winning a TON of awards already this season. According to Variety, Zhao has now become the most-awarded filmmaker in a single awards season.

And I suspect she’ll be adding an Oscar or two to her ongoing streak. JUST A SIMPLE PREDICTION.

Anyway, given how awesome this moment was, just about everyone and their mom was living for Zhao’s historic win:

I cannot stress this enough. as an Asian woman in the arts, it is SO inspiring to see Chloe Zhao make history tonight as the first woman of color to win for Best Director

And, as a casual reminder, Zhao’s next project is just a little ol’ film from Marvel called Eternals.

So, yeah, get ready….

So Marvel is really waiting to drop that Eternals trailer so that it could say “Directed by Academy and Golden Globe Award winner Chloé Zhao” in it huh? 🤔
