Welcome! Let’s talk about movie kisses.
I’ll be up front before we get into it, I have not seen all of these movies. I have done lots of research into the most romantic movies and best movie kisses, I have watched many, many scenes – YouTube has been my friend during the making of this post – and I have ranked based on the magic of the moments.
NBC / Via giphy.com
Also, in many of these movies, there are bonkers age differences between men and women. I don’t have it in me right now to unpack that in depth, but it’s there and it matters to me that it’s noted.
Let’s get right into it, shall we?
50.
The “Bella Notte” from Lady and the Tramp
Walt Disney Animation Studios
Look, they’re dogs. I cannot rank it any higher.
49.
The “Don’t Move” from Twilight
Summit Entertainment
He’s creepy. He’s so creepy.
48.
The “Somewhere” from West Side Story
United Artists
Natalie Wood is not Puerto Rican, so, I’m making it #48. Also the hands are weird.
47.
The Immediate Return from Imagine Me & You
BBC Films
Yeah, it’s a good moment, but it’s cheating.
46.
The “You Gonna Make A Call While I’m Pouring Out My Heart to You?” from Just Wright
Fox Searchlight Pictures
I don’t like how quickly Leslie forgives Scott, but something about the simple cheesiness wins me over, even if just for a little bit.
45.
The “You Weren’t So Bad Yourself” from Roman Holiday
Paramount Pictures
It’s sweet and simple, but it lacks…something. Not to mention it’s tainted by his lies throughout the movie.
44.
The “Bullshit” from How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
Paramount Pictures
I love this movie even though it’s filled with sexist stereotypes and they’re both lying to and manipulating each other the entire time. And, even though this kiss is so, so unrealistic – and not in a fun way – it makes me smile, a lot.
43.
The “She Rescues Him Right Back” from Pretty Woman
Touchstone Pictures
The little exchange they have right before they kiss is so stilted, but I do like how much the kiss feels like a big moment.
42.
The “Grow Old With You” from The Wedding Singer
New Line Cinema
It’s such a wonderful and romantic scene, but the kiss isn’t what’s noteworthy, and that’s what we’re doing here.
41.
The “Bennie and the Jets” from 27 Dresses
Fox 2000 Pictures
Again, a great scene, but the kiss isn’t what makes it great.
40.
The “Counting Your Blessings” from White Christmas
Paramount Pictures
I know I said I wouldn’t go into age differences, but this one is so wild my brain refuses to rank it any higher. I’ve seen White Christmas a lot and a 25-year difference is hard to deal with.
39.
The Beach Spectacular from From Here to Eternity
Columbia Pictures
I know it’s super duper famous, but there’s something about it that’s really weird to me.
38.
The “This One Left Them All Behind” from The Princess Bride
Act III Communications
It gets the job done, but it doesn’t pop.
37.
The Goodbye from Paris Blues
Pennebaker Productions
Like The Princess Bride, it’s more than fine or forgettable, but it’s not a WOW. Though I love trains.
36.
The “Something I Should’ve Done A Long Time Ago” from A Cinderella Story
Warner Bros.
I’m definitely biased towards this scene because of the pedestal A Cinderella Story sits on in my brain, and I have no interest in reexamining that.
35.
The “5, 6, 7, 8, Don’t Run From Me ‘Cause This Is Fate” from But I’m A Cheerleader
Cheerleader LLC
It’s lovely, but it’s also a kiss that feels in between grand and casual. It’s like it can’t decide which to be.
34.
The “You Are My Lucky Star” from Singin’ in the Rain
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM)
It’s a sweet ending, but that’s kind of all there is to it.
33.
The “I Can’t Breathe Without You” from Boomerang
Paramount Pictures
This scene has such a calm, understated vibe. Sometimes the weirdness of that takes over, but not enough to take away from the kiss.
32.
The Paintball-Lay-Down from 10 Things I Hate About You
Touchstone Pictures
They play paintball and then they make out in some hay. What more could you want from a casual teen movie kiss?
31.
The “It Still Isn’t Over” from The Notebook
New Line Cinema
Okay, so I like the scene, but the absolutely pouring rain is too much.
30.
The “Mrs. Darcy” from Pride & Prejudice
Focus Features
It’s not the hand flex close up, but it’s still a win in my book.
29.
The “1, 2, 2 1/2, 3” from My Girl
Columbia Pictures
It’s a sweet, innocent kiss between children. #29 feels like a good place for it to be.
28.
The “Ready?” from Love & Basketball
New Line Cinema
It’s also a sweet, innocent kiss between children, but they’re older so the stakes are higher. #28 feels like a good place for it to be.
27.
The “I Wanted It To Be You So Badly” from You’ve Got Mail
Warner Bros.
The lying in the bones of the story are hard to get past, but it’s a very, very, very nice scene, and I will watch You’ve Got Mail many more times in my life.
26.
The ”Cat!” from Breakfast at Tiffany’s
Jurow-Shepherd
Unlike The Notebook, this is the right amount of rain for a movie kiss, except the kiss itself is…weird? I love what it’s going for, though. The racism in this movie, however, is not good.
25.
The “Ever Consider Stanford?” from How Stella Got Her Groove Back
Twentieth Century Fox
Who doesn’t love a big romantic airport moment? It’s arguably not right for this story, but I can absolutely celebrate the sweeping drama of this kiss.
24.
The Nod of Approval from Crazy Rich Asians
Warner Bros.
This casual, happy kiss — rather than the post-proposal kiss — is what Rachel has been craving, though the severe publicness isn’t a pro.
23.
The “Are You Really As Wonderful As You Seem?” from Rodger & Hammerstein’s Cinderella
Walt Disney Television
It’s softly and wholesomely enchanting, but it’s not all that memorable.
22.
The “If You Knew What I Went Through” from Casablanca
Warner Bros.
I want to love it, but the fact that she’s fully crying prohibits me.
21.
The “It Already Came True” from Sixteen Candles
Universal Pictures
The racism and the casualness coolness with rape in Sixteen Candles really tarnishes what should be a top 10 scene.
20.
The “Because You Saw Me When I Was Invisible” from The Princess Diaries
19.
The “Now, What In The World In This Garden Could Make That Ordeal Worthwhile?” from Notting Hill
Polygram Filmed Entertainment
This movie is soooooo good, but does this scene specifically deserve to be any higher on this list? No.
18.
The “Jack Fucking Twist” from Brokeback Mountain
Focus Features
I so wish I could rank it higher, but it is cheating.
17.
The Comfort-Turned-Hot from Queen & Slim
BRON Studios
It’s awesome, but the rest of these are such clear winners that, unfortunately, there’s simply no room higher on this list. (Also, I want to say that the music is flawless.)
16.
The “Give Me My Sin Again” from Romeo + Juliet
Twentieth Century Fox
It’s an unquestionably outstanding scene, but the whimsy make it feel like it’s not real, and I think the best of the best movie kisses have to feel at least 30% real.
15.
The “Is It Still Raining? I Hadn’t Noticed” from Four Weddings and a Funeral
Working Title Films
People hate this, and sure, it’s got its ever-present layer of awkwardness, but the coziness overpowers that for me.
14.
The “There’s No One Like You, Covey” from To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before
Netflix
It’s a great scene with a very specific vibe. Love it.
13.
The “It’s Much Better Now” from Emma.
Focus Features
I adore, adore, adore the tone.
12.
The “I’m Flying, Jack” from Titanic
Twentieth Century Fox
I hate myself for being this predictable and ranking Titanic so high, but I’ve got to do what I’ve got to do. I don’t even like Titanic and here we are.
11.
The “Oh Yes They Fucking Do” from Bridget Jones’s Diary
Universal Pictures
It’s the perfect amount of dramatic. Plus, snow is so much better than rain.
10.
The “When You Realize You Want to Spend the Rest of Your Life with Someone, You Want the Rest of Your Life to Start as Soon as Possible” from When Harry Met Sally…
Castle Rock Entertainment
The romantic movie speech to end all romanic movie speeches. A very good kiss, too, but if there were no speech, it would not be #10.
9.
The Quiet Love from If Beale Street Could Talk
Annapurna Pictures
A great kiss from a great and underrated movie.
8.
The “Let’s Walk” from An Affair to Remember
Jerry Wald Productions
I LOVE that we don’t see the kiss. Fucking brilliant.
7.
The “Yeah, You Trying To Get Smart With Me, Huh?” from Moonlight
A24
The only reason this scene isn’t even higher up is because of what happens later in the film, but the moment itself is wonderfully tender.
6.
The “Yes, I Know Exactly” from Atonement
Universal Pictures
We’re not here to talk about sex scenes – lol imagine that post – so all I’ll say is this: the green dress.
5.
The “Are You Disappointed That It’s Me?” from Love, Simon
Fox 2000 Pictures
It’s sweet without being saccharine, it’s cheesy without being overripe, and it’s romantic without being unrealistic. The only flaw I have about the kiss is that it’s public, in front of people they know — which fits perfectly within the plot of the movie, but it still takes away from the kiss itself for me.
4.
The “You Already Said That” from Clueless
Paramount Pictures
It’s a masterpiece of a scene. Yeah, Cher and Josh are ex-step siblings and that’s, you know, weird, but I do not care.
3.
The Elevator from Drive
FilmDistrict
The lighting and the music are everything I want from a movie. And the kiss is followed immediately by horror, which makes it exist in its own ephemeral room. It’s stunning.
2.
The “Something Good” from The Sound of Music
Twentieth Century Fox
Lovely and magical. Wouldn’t change a thing about it.
1.
The “Kiss Me” from Slumdog Millionaire
Fox Searchlight Pictures
It’s not only the kiss that makes it #1, it’s everything before the kiss as well. There’s no other place this could possibly go, folks.
Will how shamefully wrong you think I am distract you for the rest of the day? Feel free to vent in the comments below!
